What is canine hydrotherapy ?
Canine hydrotherapy is an alternative or complement to weight bearing exercise and medication.
Hydrotherapy, water treatment for many medical conditions, has been used for humans since ancient times.  The benefits of sea water for the treatment and
prevention of leg injuries in horses have also been known for centuries.  The financial benefits surrounding the treatment of racing horses meant that around
the mid-19th century inventors began to produce machines to replicate the beneficial effects of cold sea water immersion for horses.  The greyhound racing
industry soon recognized the benefits of the equine treatment and began to develop similar machines for their animals.  From there, the therapy has been
developed, improved and extended to dogs in general.
Alternative treatments, from acupuncture to hydrotherapy, have long been considered useful - and even necessary - for humans,
so why shouldn't our pets share the benefits!
If you think your dog could benefit from
hydrotherapy,
contact us to arrange a visit or ask
your vet to make a referral.  Most pet insurance
plans cover hydrotherapy if your vet recommends it.

The benefits of canine hydrotherapy cannot be overstated.
A number of conditions in dogs may be aggravated by or show slow or
no improvement as a result of weight bearing exercise.  Among these
are
Hip Dysplasia and Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD), conditions
most common in large purebred dogs such as Labradors or Golden
Retrievers.

Injuries to the
Cruciate Ligament, or other ligaments may also make
post-operative weight bearing exercise problematic.

Obese dogs, while requiring exercise, may aggravate existing conditions
or injure themselves as a result of the weight exerted on their joints if
walked normally.  These dogs can build fitness and lose weight
effectively and safely as a result of exercise in the hydrotherapy pool
without putting excessive weight on their joints.
